Publisher THQ has announced that Homefront, its upcoming shooter based around the invasion of the United States mainland by a powerful North Korea, will be released on March 8, 2011 in North America, on March 11 on the European market and on March 10 in Australia.

The game is being prepared for the Xbox 360 from Microsoft, the PlayStation 3 from Sony, the PC and will also be delivered via OnLive.

Previous to the official announcement Homefront was thought to be readied for a February date but it has not been pushed back a little, alongside the new Red Faction.

Homefront will tell the story of how a weakened United States, brought down by economic mismanagement and by a worldwide energy crisis, is invaded by a resurgent North Korea, which has managed to conquer the South and then become a superpower.

A resistance movement rises up against the invaders and Homefront follows their exploits against the North Korean forces, which are nuclear armed and ready to crush any opposition.

Development for Homefront is being handled by Kaos Studios, which has worked on Frontline: Fuel of War, while the PC version is put together by Digital Extremes.

The game is being scripted by John Milius, who has writing credits for both Apocalypse Now and Red Dawn.

The game launch will also be accompanied by the release of a novel based on the same universe, which tracks a group of reporters as they travel across America and see first hand the effects of North Korean occupation.

Despite the fact that THQ has not yet released the first Homefront game the Chief Executive officer of the company has been talking about the sequel, saying that it will expand on the mechanics of the first one while expanding the scope of the story and moving the players to different areas of the United States.
