The latest celebrity to become victim of a death hoax is singer Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys. Messages spreading like wildfire on social media sites claim that Tennant has died in a car crash.

The messages about the singer’s death are accompanied by a link that leads to a Global Associated News article, which reads the following:

“Neil Tennant Singer of Duo Pet Shop Boys died in a single vehicle crash on Route 80 between Morristown and Roswell. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics responding to the vehicle accident and was identified by photo ID found on his body. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been a factor in this accident.”

This isn’t the first time when the entertainment site is utilized to spread false rumors.

In this case, the link points to a harmless website. However, users are advised to keep in mind that cybercriminals can exploit such rumors to lure unsuspecting internauts to their own malware-serving or survey sites.
