Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (GST) has just announced the introduction of its new line of CinemaStar hard drives, designed to provide consumers with higher capacity models, delivering an increase of storage space. The new series is built on the 500GB-per-platter technology and includes the CinemaStar 7K1000.C, boasting a 7200RPM platter speed and 1TB of storage space, in addition to the 1TB CinemaStar 5K1000 CoolSpin model. The new drives are focused on providing support for multimedia solutions, capable of handling HD video streams.

“With the market for hard drive-enabled DVRs and PVRs growing at a significant rate, we are experiencing increasing demand for our CinemaStar products,” Brendan Collins, vice president of marketing, Hitachi GST, said. “The new crop of HDTVs with built-in DVRs is one example of what’s fueling market growth. With our advanced AV features, and years of reliable hard drive design and OEM integration experience, we continue to work closely with large global manufacturers who are selling a new generation of TVs with integrated hard drives.”

Hitachi's new, 1TB hard drives have been specifically designed to enable the development of HD DVRs, DVD/HDD recorders, DVR-enabled TVs, media centers and video-surveillance systems. According to the company, both drive families have been featured with the patented fourth generation of Hitachi's SmoothStream Technology, which will essentially enable the 3.5-inch hard drives to deliver performance in AV applications. The CinemaStar 5K1000 is said to operate at silent levels of 2.4 bels during operation and draws 3.3. watts or less in idle mode.

Both series of hard drives are available in a range of capacities from 160GB to 1TB, providing customers with a wide array of choices for their next-generation media players and digital video recorders. According to Hitachi, both the CinemaStar 7K1000.C and 5K1000 will be available in high volumes beginning with the fourth quarter of 2009.
