Macs are going strong...

Ever since the iPod became the hit that it is now, many have felt that Apple was drifting away from what it started doing in the first place: making computers. Some were happy about this, claiming that the Mac platform was long dead and that they should have given way to Windows some time ago, while others were worried in case this might ever come to pass.

Today, while the iPod is still going strong, Macs are at an all time peak. Not only in terms of the technology inside them - thanks to the Intel transition - but also in terms of awareness and sales. Some analysts were hoping that Apple would top I million portables sold this quarter? that didn't happen. However, it was quite close, and 61% of all Macs sold were portables, meaning 982100 units.

Most analysts were expecting Apple to sell a conservative 1.11 million to 1.51 million units, and mark this the eighth straight quarter sales have topped 1 million machines? but Apple did more than that.

Apple's record for Macs sold is the 1.38 million units it delivered in the first quarter of 2000, or at least that used to be Apple's record. Apple's new record is the 1.610 million Macs delivered in the last quarter of fiscal 2006, the highest since Jobs introduced the machine 22 years ago. Apple has not forgotten their core business; in fact, it is doing better than ever.
