HGST has introduced what it claims to be the only 1.2TB 10,000 RPM enterprise-class SAS hard drive in the IT industry, the Ultrastar C10K1200. The storage device maker dubs it the “ultimate solution for 24x7 enterprise applications.”

For those that want to know exactly what “enterprise applications” is supposed to mean, HGST specifically mentions data mining/analysis, timely delivery of data-intensive content-on-demand (video streaming channels) and business processing in its press release.

The 1.2TB 2.5-inch SAS hard disk drive is the highest-capacity hard drive whose platter rotary speed is of 10,000 RPM (rotations per minute).

It allows a 2U, 24-bay rackmount server to store 28.8 terabytes of data, all the while running on lower power and HVAC requirements (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning).

HGST Advanced Power Management technology is mostly responsible for the latter, since it allows for multi-state idle modes (less than 5W energy used during idle).

Reduced space requirements and total cost of ownership (TCO) is an inherent consequence of these assets.

"We are pleased to be the first to ship server and storage systems using HGST's new 1.2TB Ultrastar C10K1200 enterprise-class drives," said Peter Korce, vice president and general manager, Dell Storage.

"The new HGST drives complement our offerings, helping to deliver the performance, capacity, and reliability that customers have come to expect from our Dell PowerEdge and PowerVault solutions."

HGST gave the Ultrastar C10K1200 Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) motors (low noise, better data integrity) and Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS), which counteract potential disturbances in multi-drive configurations.

The HGST-patented head load/unload ramp also minimized drive damage during integration into an existing server or data center.

Finally, the HDD has Bulk Data Encryption (self-encryption protocol) compliant with the Trusted Computing Group's Enterprise A Security Subsystem Class encryption specification (drives can be quickly repurposed).

Select OEMs are already buying the newcomer, but HGST did not say what the price of the Ultrastar C10K1200 is, only that it is shipping.
