Prom night is supposed to be the most important evening of the year for a high school student, as it marks the beginning of another stage in a teenager's life, so it should be memorable. However, sometimes the event is ruined by an unexpected incident like the one we’ll present in this article.

A female senior at Cherryville High School in North Carolina got kicked out of her Senior Prom, held at the Cherryville Golf & Country Club, because of what she was wearing.

Shafer Rupard showed up at the event on Saturday night wearing a pair of red skinny jeans, a black shirt, a snackback hat, and a leather jacket. She was reportedly having fun with her friends when she was approached by a teacher who asked her to leave, deeming her outfit inappropriate for the occasion.

Interestingly enough, the young girl was initially allowed into the event despite the fact that she was wearing pants and not a prom dress, but the controversy began when she reached the dance floor. A teacher noticed her unconventional outfit and decided to kick her out.

“The teacher tapped me on the shoulder and said she had a problem with what I was wearing. I thought it was because of the hat or the leather jacket and I was like well I'll take those off and she was like no, it's the pants,” Shafer said, as reported by Yahoo News.

The student describes the incident as ridiculous, saying that it was a “slap in the face,” and her mother Shawn McQuaige completely agrees. She claims the pants her daughter was wearing are perfectly acceptable.

“It's just the way she's always been and she wanted to feel comfortable in her own skin. We want to put out the message to all teenagers that you should be allowed to be yourself,” the girl's mother said.

The incident caused quite a controversy since it happened, and the girl's mother even looked into the Cherryville High School's conduct book to see if there was any specific dress code for prom.

She found none. On the contrary, McQuaige discovered that the student handbook specifically states that “Cherryville High School will develop a culture that is safe, nurturing, celebrates diversity and promotes school pride.”

Moreover, the prom invitation also didn't stipulate any specific dress code. That's why Rupard is now demanding an apology from her school.
