Warner Bros. has gotten all its villains together in the same room for the first time, for a “Suicide Squad” read-through. This is a major stage in the production of a film, which precedes shooting and concludes the period of pre-production.

In other words, work on “Suicide Squad,” the movie that gets some of the most famous villains in the DC Comics Universe fighting crime together, is progressing according to schedule. The film will be out in August 2016 and is directed by David Ayer.

It was Ayer who posted the first official shot of the assembled cast on social media, and who also provided the tip about the read-through. You can see his tweet below; unfortunately, he doesn’t say why Jared Leto, who plays The Joker and for whom the fans are most excited, isn’t included in it.

Leto shaved his beard and his eyebrows, and dyed his hair platinum blonde for the role, so it could be that he was asked to step out of the frame so as to maintain the secrecy around the final look of the character.

In “Suicide Squad,” Will Smith will play Deadshot, Margot Robbie Harley Quinn, Viola Davis Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman Rick Flagg, and Jai Courtney Boomerang. Model Cara Delevingne will appear as Enchantress, while Scott Eastwood, the son of Hollywood icon Clint Eastwood and an up-and-coming actor himself, has been cast in a mystery role.
