A Wii-Remote is really all Apple needs to take over the living room

It won’t be long before Apple finally unveils a TV box that really does it all, rumor has it. One very tantalizing aspect about this new device is the rumored capability to run games from the iTunes App Store. And, for that, it needs a controller.

Many people have pondered what the Apple TV could achieve by simply having access to the 1 million+ apps living in the iTunes Store. AirPlay technology already allows you to play your favorite iOS game on your big-screen TV, but you still have to use your iDevice to do that.

Enter the 2014 Apple TV with its all-new controller-remote, the brainchild of Jesus Diaz and Martin Hajek. As Diaz points out, everyone from cable companies to console makers want to take over your living room, but Apple is far better positioned to do that with its cheap set-top box.

All it needs is a comprehensive controller and the App Store. We’ve advocated for this on a number of occasions, and everyone seems to agree that what you’re seeing in these images simply must happen. Not later, but now!

The renderings made by the increasingly talented Martin Hajek may well portray the real deal. And Apple is said to be planning a launch event really soon. Chances are it’s really happening this time around.

Apple has several big advantages over game console vendors. For once, the Apple TV is ridiculously cheap, at just $99 in the States and just over €100 across Europe. It hooks up to any HD television with just one wire, and Apple could well be planning an all-wireless experience in the future (should TV vendors follow suit).

The company has hundreds of thousands of games in the App Store, many of which offer a console-grade experience. Buying them is also a matter of tapping the right icon and boom! the game is there on your screen, ready to be launched.

Developers are simply in love with Apple’s iOS platforms, and coding games for them is a relatively easy affair. Apple also offers some of the best coding tools on the planet.

The hardware in Apple’s current TV box is nearly identical to the one found in iPhones and iPads. If the 2014 Apple TV packs even the 2013 A7 chip, you won’t be able to tell the difference between a PS3 game and an Apple TV game. And the list goes on.
