Boredom has driven us to explore new territory and be more creative

No one likes to be bored, yet everyone feels bored sometimes. Even today, with smartphones, apps and the internet never too far away, people get bored. We may see it as an annoyance and it is, but that's because it's designed that way.

In fact, boredom is good for you, boredom is your brain telling you that it needs stimulation, as the video from Vsauce, embedded above, explains.

When you get bored, you look for things to do, new things that you haven't tried before, you think about new stuff or at the very least use your imagination.

In other words, boredom pushes you to stimulate your brain, which does more than just keep you occupied, it keeps you healthy. Without constant and varied stimulants, the brain atrophies, less new nerve cells are created and the ones you have die off easier.

What's more, from an evolutionary standpoint, boredom pushed us to try new things, explore new territory, it played a major role in the evolution of more complex animals and early humans.

At the same time, unchecked boredom can lead to all sorts of problems, from anxiety, to hallucinations, to more serious issues.
