Earlier this month, during a promotional appearance for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1,” which opened in theaters last night, Friday, November 21, 2014, actress Jennifer Lawrence revealed that her most traumatizing experience on set was when she had to sing a song for the film.
As she explained, she wanted to lip-synch to Lorde’s vocals, but director Francis Lawrence wouldn’t let her because he thought the moment would not come across as authentic to viewers. So, instead, he “forced” her to sing in front of the entire production crew.
As per her own admission, Jennifer has the voice of a “tone-deaf Amy Winehouse,” so she cried a lot both before and after the scene. But she sang nonetheless and she even did it without help from a vocal coach because she believed this would have taken something from Katniss’ credibility in that moment.
You can now listen to that song as the studio released the ballad “The Hanging Tree” from the official OST to further boost interest in the film. You can find it embedded below.
Jennifer Lawrence isn’t the best singer out there, that much is true, but at the same time, there’s something deeply touching and beautiful about the ballad, which is set to a melody written by the Lumineers. So whatever trauma and embarrassment Lawrence went through to get it done were worth it.
“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” also stars Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Donald Sutherland, Julianne Moore, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
