Some of you might remember that Samsung announced the S Band as an accessory companion with the Galaxy S4 smartphone, but for some reason the wearable never actually made it to the market.

But Samsung isn’t the company to give up on things easily. The failure (we assume it was a failure) of the first S Band just prompted Samsung to go back to the drawing board and work more avidly towards a successor for its defunct, yet unborn fitness tracking line.

Now, word on the street has it Samsung is going to be announcing the new S Band alongside the new Galaxy S5 and still market it as an accessory. And the ever-resourceful SamMobile has received a few slides leaked from Samsung’s own laboratories (they are actually part of the sales guide for the Galaxy S5) that shows the upcoming S Band in its full splendor.

Actually, it was no secret the S Band was coming, with the device being spotted taking a stroll through the FCC a while ago. Anyway, going back to the slide, we can see Samsung has greatly improved upon the design of the original, so the new S Band boasts a look similar to the recently launched Gear Fit.

Right off the bat, you can notice that unlike the original, the new S Band lacks a display, meaning the wearable will only act as a sensor capable of tracking and picking up bodily cues.

As expected, these parameters will be relayed to the wearer’s smartphone and be showed in the Activity Tracker app and the S Health app that’s going to debut on the new Galaxy S5.

What will Samsung’s S Band be tracking? Well nothing out of the ordinary just things like steps taken, calories burned and so forth. Most importantly, the S Band will come bundling a sleep monitoring features, but at the moment we can just speculate whether the feat will be monitoring sleep cycle duration, the number of times the wearer woke up, or be capable of more advanced capabilities like differentiating between light sleep and REM (rapid-eye-movement) sleep.

Drawing from smartwatch functions, the S Band will be capable of relying notifications, alerting users when they are getting a call, text message by vibrating, setting off a subtle alarm or flashing a LED light.

Like the Gear Fit, the new S Band will allow users to customize it by allowing them to choose the strap (will be available in white, yellow, orange and gray options).

So far, we can’t say the S Band appears to be bringing something extraordinary to the table, but as more information slips out, we could be forced to reconsider this position.
