They both sell for almost similar outright prices

Apple recently reported amazing iPhone 6 sales numbers after the first weekend, which will definitely not be the case with BlackBerry’s next flagship smartphone, the Passport.

Even so, there are a lot of customers waiting for the Passport to go on sale later today and who didn’t consider for one second to get the iPhone 6 instead.   Most of the customers choose their smartphones based on OS, but with the iPhone 6, there seems to be a lot of users switching from other mobile platforms due to specs.   I’m talking about Android and Windows Phone users who were only held back from getting an iPhone by the smaller screen. Now that Apple has come up with two alternatives, both with larger screens, many have decided to go for it.   This is not the case with BlackBerry fans who are now expecting a totally different device from the Canadian company. The Passport is an innovative device that features an unusual square form factor and enough power to become BlackBerry’s flagship smartphone.   Design-wise, BlackBerry Passport and iPhone 6 don’t have anything in common. The iPhone 6 is larger, thinner and lighter, while the Passport is wider, thicker and much heavier (194g).   The Passport sports a 4.5-inch IPS LCD display that supports 1440 x 1440 pixel resolution and 453ppi (pixel per inch), while the iPhone 6 has a slightly larger 4.7-inch Retina HD display that offers 750 x 1334 pixel resolution (326ppi).   The former comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, whereas the latter features shatter proof glass and oleophobic coating. Both offer strong protection against scratches.

On paper, things may seem obvious, but real-life use may offer different results

On the inside, BlackBerry Passport is equipped with a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and an Adreno 330 graphics processing unit, while the iPhone 6 has a 1.4 dual-core Cyclone processor and a hexa-core PowerVR GX6650 GPU.   Preliminary tests have shown that iPhone 6’s CPU is slightly better than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 chipset, and the same goes for the GPU. However, the iPhone 6 comes with only 1GB of RAM, while the BlackBerry Passport boasts no less than 3GB of RAM.

The iPhone 6 comes in three different variations, 16GB, 64GB and 128GB, and lacks microSD card slot for memory expansion. The Passport, however, packs 32GB of internal memory and microSD card slot (up to 64GB).   On paper, Passport’s 13-megapixel camera with autofocus, LED flash and OIS (optical image stabilization) looks to be the winner, but it’s not the number of megapixels that counts, so iPhone 6’s 8-megapixel camera may just as well be the winner.   There’s no way to tell which one will win when it comes to camera, not until the first camera samples made with BlackBerry Passport get published online.   One would also say that BlackBerry Passport has by far the better life autonomy thanks to its 3450 mAh battery, but tests revealed that iPhone 6’s 1810 mAh battery offers very good autonomy as well.   When it comes to connectivity, both smartphones come with LTE support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0, NFC (Near Field Communication) and GPS.   It’s also worth mentioning that the BlackBerry Passport includes another method of input, namely a 3-row touch responsive QWERTY physical keyboard, while the iPhone 6 has a fingerprint sensor.   According to Blackberry’s CEO, the Passport should go on sale for only $599 (€465), while the iPhone 6 can be purchased for as low as $650 (€505).
