Getting the most out of one's DVDs and HDTV set

While the battle between the next-generation formats, HD DVD and Blu-ray, rages on, there are still quite a large number of manufactures out there that still launch "classical" DVD players, albeit with a few features that would make them more competitive against the next-generation players. And one such device has just been launched by the people over at Helios Labs, namely the H2000, a DVD player that upscales normal DVDs to 1080i, in order to allow to fully enjoy their HDTV sets.

Helios Labs' H2000 is a region-free DVD player capable of upscaling a variety of formats, including MPEG-4, XviD, DivX and MPEG-2 to 1080i resolution via Component, HDMI and VGA. Furthermore, it can output 480i/576i unprocessed digital signal via HDMI.

Here's what Roy Ping, CTO of Helios Labs, has to say about his company's latest device. "H2000 offers the most HD upscaling options. You can let it upscale all your content to 720p/1080i, or you can allow it to output an unprocessed 480i/576i video signal and allow your TV/external video scaler to do the work. This will help customers maximize its performance and consequently, ensure you have a much clearer, distortion-free image."

"Many HDTV's also only have one HDMI input, which is usually taken up by something else like a HD cable box, so we have given the H2000 the ability to upscale over Component, HDMI and even VGA, so you can be sure that your TV can connect to our player," he adds.

Another interesting feature provided by this player is the fact that it provides support for the VobSub subtitle format, which is something you don't see everyday in a DVD player.

The H2000 will retail in North America for around 99 US dollars, which is actually a very small price to pay for such a device, especially one with such extended upscaling capabilities.
