14 DAY TRIAL // Earlier today, word got out in the media that the real reason why Heidi Montag had decided to leave and then file for legal separation from Spencer Pratt had a lot to do with money: namely that she made more than him and felt he was holding her down from earning more. InTouch Weekly says that, despite appearances, the two are actually broke, but continue living large.
Though they were, at one point, the couple everyone loved to hate, even negative media translated into big bucks with Heidi and Spencer. Back in the day when they were still on MTV’s The Hills, the two ranked in a lot for a single episode of the show, which meant they could afford to live a more luxurious life. Now, their income has been greatly reduced but they continue to live like before, looking for new ways to make a buck, the e-zine says.
“‘They are completely broke,’ an insider tells In Touch, noting that their dwindling popularity is to blame. ‘Their income has dropped – but their spending habits have not,’ explains the insider. And they buy things for no reason whatsoever. ‘Heidi has never met a designer bag that she didn’t have to have,’ says a source. ‘And Spencer spends all of his money on gadgets, including professional night vision equipment and telescopes.’ Because of their irresponsible spending habits, Spencer, who made about $65,000 per episode on The Hills, and Heidi, who raked in a cool $100,000 per episode, are now reportedly living on credit until they find new ways to make money,” InTouch writes.
Their career in TV and the deals they had with several paparazzi agencies – not to mention what they got for their interviews with the media – helped the two amass a considerable fortune. Only a few years after they started earning big money, though, they are left almost with no financial resource whatsoever, while also being forced to keep up appearances. As per reports, a large chunk of the money they made went into Heidi’s music career, Spencer’s crystals and beefing up security for their public appearances.
“$2 million on Heidi’s music: ‘Within the first week, we will definitely make our money back,’ said Heidi. Sadly, they didn’t.
