As made evident by this image snapped in the middle of Washington DC, near the Washington Monument, the United States capital is severely affected by the massive snowstorm and accompanying precipitations that struck the northeastern parts of the country yesterday, January 21.

Traffic was made a nightmare by the snowfall, and thousands of flights had to be canceled again, following a similar set of measures enacted at the beginning of the month throughout many regions in the East and Midwest. The canceled flights are likely to lead to significant economic losses.

The temperatures recorded yesterday were far below the average, reaching as low as -28 degrees Celsius (-20 degrees Fahrenheit) in Chicago, Illinois. In the east, the storm affected areas from Washington DC to New England., PhysOrg reports.

Significant disruptions were registered in the functioning of several federal buildings, as well as some schools and offices. Winds reached peak speeds of up to 32 kilometers (20 miles) per hour on Wednesday morning, turning Washington DC into an eerily-silent metropolis.
