If the media takes it on

It's hard to create a videogame that tackles mature themes. One just has to ask the people at BioWare who have been vilified by the media, especially Fox News, for the simple fact that they offered some details about how love might look in the future between adults of two different species.

One just has to look at how hard it has been for Fahrenheit to be released uncensored in North America. But David Cage, the leader of the team at Quantic Dream working on Heavy Rain, the story of the Origami Killer, says that he is still determined to make the game mature in every sense of the word.

Responding to a question about how Heavy Rain will be treating mature themes, David Cage stated, at the recent Eurogamer Expo, that “As a game creator I have one very simple rule. Everything is allowed, no limits, as long as it makes sense in the story and is not gratuitous.”

The creator says that he will be adding as much material aimed at adults in his game as he needs to get the story across to the player. As for the anticipated backlash, he believes that if the media assaults the game for its content, “the whole community of gamers, I'm sure, will stand up and throw stones at them. That's what I hope. I count on you guys.”

Heavy Rain will tell the story of four characters involved with a mysterious killer that leaves behind a trail of origami creations. The game is said to contain about 70 scenes and will feature a variety of ways to the ending, some of which could even imply the death of one or more of the main characters. Heavy Rain is a PlayStation 3 exclusive that will be released in 2010.
