Only recently, entomology grad student Ross Winton happened to stumble upon what he thought was a “headless” insect, which somehow got caught into one of the traps he had set up in southwest Montana's sand dunes.

After having a closer look at the insect, Ross Winton found that its head was very much present.

Thus, the only reason why he did not see it was that the insects took care of hiding it inside its thorax.

Apparently, in a way very much similar to that of various turtle species, this creature can tuck its head back into its body, most likely in order to keep safe from any potential threats.

Researchers have concluded that this peculiar insect is in fact a representative of one of the rarest species of ladybugs in the US.

“The tiny species is known from only two individuals, one male and one female, making it qualify for the rarest species in the USA,” specialist Michael Ivie told members of the press.
