The development team at Harmonix announces that its much rumored Chroma project is a first-person shooter that will be powered by music and will be launched using a free-to-play business model, with a focus on multiplayer matches.

Hidden Path Entertainment is also working on the new title and the two studios say that they are aiming to reinvent the classic arena FPS formula in order to deliver a fast-paced and creative experience.

Chroma is being created using the Unreal Engine.

The soundtrack of the title is designed to influence every aspect of the game, from shooting to movement, and players will be able to choose an arsenal of sounds that reflects their tastes and unleash it upon their opponents.

On the battlefield, teamwork is a significant advantage, which means that gamers can create their own band in order to complete each other's attacks and abilities.

Chroma will feature Change Up moments, which will see the entire battlefield shift based on the music, both physically and strategically.

Harmonix promises that the new title will not offer an advantage to those willing to pay to play.

Alex Rigopulos, a co-founder and CEO of Harmonix, states, "Watching the teams at Harmonix and Hidden Path begin to bring this vision to life has been tremendously exciting. We’re also thrilled to release an alpha version of this game and to evolve it in collaboration with our players. We can’t wait to hear what people think of this new approach to both first-person shooters and music games."

Mark Terrano, the chief creative officer at Hidden Path Entertainment, adds, "we were delighted to help Harmonix realize their dream of a musical shooter, and are looking forward to the next step – seeing it continue to evolve with the energy, input and creativity from the game community!"

All those interested in the ideas that Chroma promotes can now sign up for a very limited alpha test via an official site.
