While some e-readers already have color, they use an LCD to achieve it, but E Ink has been working on a new e-paper solution capable of color, one which Hanvon might just be the first to make use of.

For those that do not know, E Ink is one of, if not the greatest supplier of electrophoretic displays and was formerly known as Prime View International (PVI).

Its grayscale e-paper has practically been used in almost every e-reader out there and will keep being used

Still, those that like to read books in electronic format repeatedly expressed desire for color, either through surveys or other means.

As such, Hanvon, the leading vendor of e-book readers in China, is making its way to making the first e-paper-using color e-reader.

“EIH has improved the whiteness, contrast ratio and color performance of the new color EPD. Hanvon is handling the overall product design, and they will focus on special markets such as educational institutions, private companies and government offices for the color e-book reader,” said E Ink chairman Scott Liu in an interview with Digitimes.

“EIH and Hanvon have been working together for many years. I would like to pay my respect to EIH, which decided to explore the potential of e-paper, including the acquisition of E Ink in order to have a tight control of the supply chain, when most people in the market were skeptical about such a sector,” stated Hanvon chairman Liu Yingjian.

“E-paper is a key breakthrough in IT technology, and it is also a breakthrough for the industries and global economy, and will bring significant changes in the semiconductor and panel industries,” Yingjian went on to saying.

“In terms of digitalization in the development of human culture, the text is the last breakthrough in the process, following the audio and video, and will have significant impacts on the dissemination of content and the publishing industry.”

Unfortunately, no info was given on the specifications of the electronic device, nor on when exactly it will launch.
