Huawei is one of the companies that rushed to unveil products at MWC 2014, before the official kick-start of the conference. One of them was the MediaPad X1, a 7-inch tablet with HD display which will provide competition for the Nexus 7 and iPad.

The device can be used to place phone calls as well and it looks like a huge smartphone, but Huawei insists it’s the most compact tablet ever made.

To prove their claims, they demonstrate the MediaPad X1 is 7.18 mm / 0.2 inches thin, compared to the iPad, which is 7.5 mm / 0.29 inches thick. The slate has a 2.9 mm / 0.1 inches edge bezel and is 30% lighter than the iPad and 20% than the Nexus 7 as its 239 g / 0.5 lbs.

Huawei also says the X1 has the best screen-to-body ratio set at 80%. The tablet boasts a capable 1920 x 1200 resolution with 323 ppi and has a no ledge structure. Furthermore, it boasts a nano-injection plastic molding on the aluminum case.

The screen features LTPS (low temperature polisilicon tech), which allows the display to be 20-30% more power efficient and to produce a faster response and less reflective, richer colors combined with CABC (content adaptive brightness control), a system that also lowers power consumption and delivers sharper fonts.

The X1 has what the company calls “intelligent grip suppression,” meaning you can hold a thumb on the screen and still scroll with your other finger.

The tablet is powered by a 1.6 GHz quad-core SoC with 28nm HPM tech and 4G LTE Cat4. It also offers dual cameras, in the form of a capable 13MP rear snapper (Sony Exmor RS BSI auto scene recognition, 1080p recording) and a 5MP frontal camera. Compare that to the iPad and Nexus 7 that have just 5MP and 1.2MP, respectively.

The 5000 mAh battery should be able to allow users to stream up to 5 movies, watch 8 stored films, access internet for 15 hours and play 125 hours of music.

As a fun fact, Huawei boasts a holdable design, and we can vouch for that, the tablet can fit inside a pants or chest pocket without any problems.
