“Hancock,” the 2008 film where Will Smith plays an alcoholic, irresponsible and unwilling superhero, grossed $624 million at the international box-office, so it was only to be expected that Columbia came up with a sequel to it. While the original was about 12 years in the making, development on the follow-up will perhaps take considerably much less now that the studio already has writers hired for the job, as The Hollywood Reporter informs.

Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara have been officially attached to the project, their job being that of coming up with a story to the first “Hancock,” one that will hopefully sell just as well, if not even better. From what several movie-oriented publications are saying, all the good signs are there: both Fierro and Mazzara wrote for FX’s “The Shield.” Fierro also worked on Fox’s “24” and Showtime’s “Dexter,” while Mazzara did the adaptation of “Crash.” If there’s anyone who can make the story stick and be as appealing to the wide audiences as the first one, then it’s probably these two guys, word has it.

“Columbia has hired scribes Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara to pen the sequel to the Will Smith superhero movie, which grossed $624 million worldwide last year. The original producing team is expected to return. Plot details are being kept under wraps, though the scribes will work with Smith and director Peter Berg to build on the world hinted at in the first movie.” THR writes. Towards the end of the first film, Smith’s character is revealed to be part of a line of immortal beings who have lived on Earth since ever and who lose their power when near another immortal being of their kind.

Speaking recently with Sci-Fi Wire, director Peter Berg dropped some hints as to the direction the sequel might take, saying, “There might be another god out there. Might be another one.” As for how development on the project went, Berg could not reveal too many details, but he did assure fans that this would not be some rushed superhero film that disappointed. “They [Columbia] like to fast-track it, but Will’s busy, I’m pretty busy. We’re excited to do one, but we want the script to be right and the movie to be right. We don’t feel a burning imperative to go right back into it.” Berg explained.
