Neill Blomkamp, the director of science fiction hit District 9, says that he is still interested in working on a Halo movie project as long as he can have full control over the experience in order to mold the game universe into an interesting big screen experience.

The director tells IGN that, “I still really love the world and the universe and the mythology of Halo. If I was given control, I would really like to do that film.”

He adds, “When something pre-exists, there’s this idea of my own interpretation versus 150 other people involved with the film’s interpretation of the same intellectual property. Then the entire filmgoing audience has their interpretation. You can really live up to or fail in their eyes. That part isn’t appealing to me, but the original pieces are appealing.”

Developer 343 Industries and publisher Microsoft have claimed that the Halo movie project is moving ahead at full speed, but they have not talked about the potential involvement of Neill Blomkamp.

District 9 was a great movie that focused on a unique take on aliens and the way they might deal with life on Earth.

Presumably, Neill Blomkamp would also like to take the core premises of the Halo game universe and deconstruct them in order to create a movie that tackled bigger themes, while keeping familiar ideas and characters.

Microsoft probably wants a more traditional experience, which puts Master Chief at the center and appeals to traditional gamers.

Forward Unto Dawn was released during 2012 and was well received by fans of the franchise, but failed to find an audience outside this group.

At the moment, 343 Industries is working on a new Halo title that will be part of the Forerunner trilogy and will be delivered on the Xbox 720 gaming console from Microsoft, yet unannounced.
