SafeNet and the Software and the Information Industry Association (SIIA) have conducted a study to analyze the software monetization landscape.

The survey shows that software publishers are losing serious amounts of money because of inadequate licensing models, lack of usage insight, but also due to intellectual property theft and piracy.

The numbers from the report show that almost half (48%) of software publishers say that intellectual property theft has a significant impact on their business. In addition, 43% of the respondents have revealed that software privacy has resulted in revenue loss.

It appears that publishers are still struggling to protect their products. 70% of them have encountered piracy prevention issues, while 63% are having difficulties in ensuring that their creations cannot be reverse-engineered.

Code-tampering prevention is a problem for 51% of them.

On the other hand, 60% of the 194 enterprise software end users that participated in the study admitted using unlicensed software last year.

74% of software publishers are worried that their products might become compromised, but only 46% of them use intellectual property protection tools and only 58% of them employ license compliance enforcement mechanisms.

“These survey results highlight the tremendous need for a change in how software developers approach and execute their software monetization strategies,” said SafeNet Senior Vice President Prakash Panjwani.

“Developers need solutions that address the four key elements of software monetization—effective packaging, access and compliance control, back-office automation and management, and usage monitoring,” Panjwani added.

“By adopting a comprehensive approach to software monetization, organizations can not only protect their critical IP from piracy and reverse-engineering, but help drive revenue and profitability as well.”
