Taiwanese handset maker HTC unveiled plans to deliver the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for some of its smartphones.

The HTC Rhyme is among those devices confirmed to receive the said update by the end of the year. It’s likely that HTC won’t reveal the exact release date of the major upgrade for the Rhyme, but rumors on the upcoming update will probably emerge closer to launch.

That being said, HTC Rhyme owners should expect a minor maintenance update that will bring several new features for the dock and some improvements meant to make users’ experience much smoother.

For example, the “Ringtones” has been replaced with “Edit Home,” so when users press the Menu key on the home screen, they will get the new option.

In addition, the signal strength meter has been updated to 5 bar Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI). Once the update is applied, mobile networks will no longer be disabled when using Power Saver.

Keep in mind that the HTC Rhyme will be enabled with the Wireless Alerting System after the update. Several new features for the HTC Rhyme’s dock have been included as well. Firstly, all default apps in Dock Mode have been changed to “Phone” and “Calendar.”

Secondly, the in-call volume control has been added to Dock Mode and “All Apps” option is now included onto Dock Mode. Last but not least, an issue with the dock volume changing to 20% has been addressed.

The following changes have been included as well:

– Device displays available music on the device and provides an option to purchase ringtones from the MOD application when a user is attempting to set a new ringtone through a prepopulated list; – Mail shortcut now shows unread mail count.

The new software update 2.20.605.3 710RD is about 68MB in size and is expected to be pushed OTA (over the air) within the next few days.
