Today, Australian mobile phone carrier Vodafone has announced the immediate availability of a new high-end smartphone on its airwaves, the HTC Desire HD. Starting today, the operator's customers have to possibility to purchase the new device from the company's website and from its shops around the country for $0 upright on a $59 per month plan.

In addition to being available at Vodafone, the new Android-based smartphone was also put on sale via Three in the country.

The handset was already available for pre-order on the carrier's website, which has it exclusively on its airwaves on the Australian market.

While announcing the availability of the device, Vodafone also unveiled the fact that it would have the pre-ordered Desire HD units shipped to end users today.

In case there are some who might have not encountered the high-end handset before, we should note that it comes with a large 4.3-inch WVGA touchscreen display on board, beneath which HTC packed a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon application processor.

The specifications list of the new device also includes an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with auto focus, LED flash and 720p HD video recording capabilities.

The phone comes with 1.5GB of internal memory, expandable via a microSD memory card slot to up to 32GB.

Other specs include Dolby Mobile & SRS virtual surround sound, 3.5mm stereo audio jack, ambient light, motion G and proximity sensors, as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity capabilities.

The new high-end smartphone runs under Google's Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, on top of which HTC put its own UI, subbed HTC Sense.

The new mobile phone features great email, messaging and social networking capabilities, as well as fast Internet browsing features.

Not to mention that it comes with support for various services from Google, including Search, Maps, Gmail, or YouTube, as well as for the Android Market, from where users will be able to download various applications for their devices.
