Earlier this month, Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices officially took the wraps off its highly anticipated, next-generation six-core Opteron 2400 series of processors, codenamed Istanbul. Designed to deliver increased performance and energy efficiency, the new Opterons were featured with a couple of new technologies, enabling business users to upgrade their current Opteron-based servers to the latest solutions from AMD. On that note, Palo Alto, California-based Hewlett-Packard has just unveiled the launch of its new xw9400 professional workstations, designed on said processors, becoming the first PC vendor to integrate the six-core Opterons in a line of professional workstations.

“HP understands the immense pressure its customers are under to deliver more return on investment in a shorter period of time,” said Jeff Wood, director, Worldwide Marketing, Workstations, HP. “By providing the most extreme combination of technologies – up to 12 cores in one workstation – HP continues its commitment to bringing customers leading-edge technologies.”

These new high-performance workstations from HP have been designed to accommodate up to 2 Opteron 2400-series CPUs, making up for a total of 12 working cores, each of them said to be capable of delivering 34 percent more performance per watt than previous-generation quad-core chips. Thanks to the unique features that have been built in AMD's latest server processors, customers will take advantage of increased interconnect rates of 4.8GT/s, up from 2GT/s.

Additionally, these new workstation systems have been featured with the ATI FirePro V7750 graphics processing unit for workstations and are equipped with 80 PLUS power supply units. The new HP xw9400 workstation is registered as an Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) Gold product, according to HP.

As far as pricing goes, the system is available now through the company's website for users in the U.S., with a starting price tag of US$1,899.
