In its effort to increase the sales of its notebooks, HP unveiled five new HP Pavilion and four Compaq Presario models.

The updated models are covering a wide range of options from thin and light to desktop replacement and the prices start at $699 before any upgrades or rebates.

HP announced that each computer will be powered by Turion or Sempron chips, as well as the option to install Intel's mobile Pentium or Celeron chips. The baseline notebooks will ship with either an 80GB or a 100GB hard drive, HP's signature 6-in-1 digital media reader and three USB 2.0 ports on some models.

The HP Pavilion list price includes the company's entertainment-focused dv1000, and its smaller-size ze2000, zv6000, dv4000 and zd8000 models. The Compaq Presario laptops with the new AMD processors include the M2000, R4000, V4000 and V2000 series mobile PCs.

Turion is AMD's answer to the success of Intel's low-power Pentium M processor. Turion is a 64-bit chip, unlike the Pentium M, but early reviews from chip enthusiast sites have given the Pentium M a slight edge on performance and battery life.

The AMD models are available immediately on HP's Web site, and the new configurations of HP's other notebooks will become available later on this month, the HP spokesperson said.
