HP has just announced the introduction of the enterprise-oriented Windows 7 running Slate 2 Tablet PC that is designed to come as a replacement for the company's previous Slate 500 tablet released in October of last year.

Design wise, not many things have changed compared to the tablet the Slate 2 is meant to replace, but on the inside there were a couple of changes introduced meant to improve the overall performance of the 8.9-inch device.

The most important of these changes is HP's introduction of the Intel Atom Z670 processor that replaces the previous Z540.

In addition, HP also introduced a smaller 32GB SSD option, which enabled the company to decrease the starting price of the Slate 2 Tablet PC, as well as Swype support.

Various security features like TPM and Computrace Pro are also included, the latter being specially designed in order to protect against data theft by allowing customers to remotely delete data at the file, directory or operating system level.

The rest of the features list includes Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth and optional 3G connectivity, a front-facing VGA webcam, a 3-megapixel back-mounted snapper, SRS Premium Sound and support for the HP Slate Dock to provide the tablet with two USB 2.0 ports and an HDMI port.

"HP is dedicated to the tablet PC category and continues to listen to customers and improve the product in ways that best address their business needs," said Dan Forlenza, vice president and general manager, Commercial Managed IT Segment, HP.

"The HP Slate includes the right mix of rich features, support for custom-built applications, and the security and connectivity needed for today's highly mobile and rigorous day-to-day professional environment," concluded the company's rep.

HP said that the Slate 2 Tablet PC will go on sale later this month with a starting price of $699 (roughly 510 EUR). The tablet will be available worldwide.
