Coming to show that not all rumors should be believed, HP has come forth and issued an official statement meant to completely deny all rumors that implied it may be entertaining plans of selling its PC business.

As many consumers know, HP is the world's greatest supplier of personal computers and has held this position for years.

Considering this, it would sound completely outrageous that HP would even be considering selling its PC business to anyone.

Outrageous or not, however, this is exactly what a series of rumors implied just a short time ago, even going as far as saying that Samsung may end up being the buyer.

Needless to say, the reports were packed full of all sorts of arguments as to how the deal would or would not make sense, although the latter sort was most prevalent.

Among other things, HP was said to have been planning for a transaction of the sort as far back as the fourth quarter of 2010.

Fortunately, this one piece of rumor seems to have spread far and wide enough that HP itself saw fit (or felt compelled) to come out and officially speak on the matter.

As expected (or not, depending on how one looks at it), the outfit said that it has absolutely no intention of carrying out any such deal.

“Irresponsible reporting by Taiwan’s Commercial Times, suggesting that HP might sell its PC business, should be dismissed as market rumor and speculation,” said Bill Wohl, HP senior vice president and chief communications officer.

“HP runs the world’s largest PC business and it is core to HP’s strategy for the connected world.”

What remains to be seen is if any other IT players suddenly decide to star in similar rumors or if 2011 will actually bring about the sealing of any particularly shocking deals.
