One of the most important reasons why Nintendo's famous Wii gaming console has enjoyed such an overwhelming level of success is directly related to its very innovative controller, the Wiimote, which picks up the user's movements and translates them into on-screen commands. However, Nintendo is not the only company who had the idea of creating such a motion-sensing product and a very good example has just been provided by Gyration, a well-known manufacturer of wireless control devices (both mice and keyboards), who announced the development of its M2000 Travel Air-Mouse, a device that allows users to perform mouse actions in the air.

According to the company's statement, the Travel Air-Mouse has accurate and faithful response to hand movements, making precise tracking possible in just about any type of environment. Moreover, with the help of Gyration's exclusive Swipes technology, the user can initiate any command with a flick of the wrist.

The device is quite compact, weighing less than four ounces (113 grams), and versatile enough to be integrated with a PC or laptop from wherever a user needs to work. The device also sports a sleek, ergonomic design, which allows it to work very comfortably for either left- or right-handed consumers.

The core of the new peripheral from Gyration is represented by the company's newly developed UltraSense technology, which includes multiple motion sensors and a core control chip containing a sophisticated set of patented algorithms, power management features and integration capabilities. It offers "five degrees of freedom" and breakthrough sensing accuracy for consumer control devices for PC, PC-TV integration, gaming and set top box applications.

Moreover, the UltraSense features significant improvements in drift, roll compensation, resolution, power state control and many other critical motion control specifications. Furthermore, the new technology also allows for dynamic, real-time adjustment of many key parameters, allowing for on-the-fly customization in order to fine tune the user experience as the background applications and user interfaces change.

"People are increasingly mobile these days, as evidenced by the dominance of notebook computer sales, and aren't always tied to the desk," said Greg Smith, vice president for marketing and OEM sales at Gyration. "The Travel Air-Mouse was designed with this in mind, providing the business traveler or 'digital couch potato' with the freedom to control their PC and entertainment without the need for a desktop surface."

The Gyration M2000 Travel Air-Mouse is scheduled to hit the shelves in Q1 of 2008 and has a MSRP of around 70 US dollars, which is a pretty attractive price, considering the fact that the competition's comparable products (Logitech's MX Air, for example) are generally a lot more expensive.
