“It’s that time of the year,” actress Gwyneth Paltrow writes in the January newsletter of GOOP. Contrary to what you may think, she’s not referring to anything that might cause us pleasure, but to detox – that time of the year when we must do what we can to make sure our body eliminates all the toxins we’ve been stuffing into it the previous year, and especially over the winter holidays.

“I need to lose a few pounds of holiday excess. Anyone else? I like to do fasts and detoxes a couple of times during the year, the most hardcore one being the Master Cleanse I did last spring.” Gwyneth reveals. For those not in the know, the Master Cleanse is also known as the Lemonade Diet, and basically consists of ceasing to eat and starting to drink plenty of water and other concoctions, like laxative teas.

However, the actress’ advice in terms of detoxing is to not go down the Master Cleanse way, since it has been proven to have extreme side-effects on the body. While it works without a single trace of doubt, it is neither “pretty” nor easy to stick to, Gwyneth explains. All these added have convinced her to take the matter up to her nutritionist, who, in his turn, advised her to tackle the issue gradually, without taking up just one drastic plan and sticking to it.

In the end, this is also Gwyneth’s word of advice for all those who want to lose the extra holiday weight or who simply want to feel better, lighter and “cleaner” by detoxing. Plenty of water is, of course, the key to success. “You can detox easily and effectively while you continue to eat as long as you are cutting out the foods and other substances that interfere with the detoxification process. Make sure you check with your doctor before you start any detox. Drink A LOT of water.” Gwyneth writes, also offering a seven-day plan for all those interested, along with plenty of recipes for shakes and juices – easy to make and extremely healthy.
