Gwen Stefani is one of the lucky few to boast a successful career outside the band that launched her but, even so, she would never consider going down that road again.

As she’s about to start promoting the band’s new album (No Doubt is back after a hiatus of over a decade), Gwen talks to Elle UK about her career so far and whether she’d ever go back.

Going solo was a cool thing to do and it certainly was fun for a while, but it rather went against her true nature, Gwen says.

“[I was] playing different roles and pretending I was something else in a way. And now I just feel like I’m back to being the girl I was in ninth grade when I discovered Madness,” she says.

As fun as going solo was, writers’ block was a nightmare and, if only for that, she’d never do it again.

“I would never do that again. I would never put myself through it, it was just torture… I cried during those sessions,” Gwen says.

No Doubt’s comeback album “Push & Shove” will be out on September 25.
