Years after Guy Ritchie's marriage to pop superstar Madonna ended in divorce, the famous director is opening up a bit about what caused it to come crashing down, in a brand new interview with Details magazine.

While he still refrains from going into specifics, Guy does make it very clear that he doesn't regret marrying Madonna, even if divorce was not how he imagined the relationship would end.

He loves his children and, to speak truthfully, he doesn't regret that the marriage boosted his profile as a film director, he says.

“I don't know,” Ritchie says when asked about how he adjusted to being a relative unknown in the US, suddenly married to “the most famous woman in the world.”

“By the way, I enjoyed my first marriage. It's definitely not something I regret. The experience was ultimately very positive. I love the kids that came out of it, and I could see no other route to take,” he adds.

As for the breakup, Guy only hints at the madness that happens behind closed doors in Madonna's life.

“But you move on, don't you? You're right, I stepped into a soap opera, and I lived in it for quite a long period of my life. I'll probably be more eloquent on it 10 years from now,” the director explains.

Of course, marrying Madonna also had other advantages, the most important being that Guy, a talented British director still struggling to go mainstream, finally got the exposure he needed so badly.

“When you end up with a lot of the things you set out to chase and find that you've stumbled into all sorts of hollow victories, then you become deeply philosophical. I'm quite happy that that experience was accelerated for me. I'm glad I made money, in other words. And I'm glad I got married,” he says.

This is actually the second time Guy says something not quite so flattering about his famous and controversial ex.

In October 2009, for instance, he said he loved her “but she's retarded,” as we also informed you at the time.
