The sleepy kitten didn't have to do much to be an Internet star, except lie flat on its back that is. As it falls asleep, its owners play with it as if it were a toy, and the cat holds any position they put it in, as if it were made out of clay.
The cat was nicknamed Gumby after Art Clokey's green clay character. A film school graduate, Clokey produced animated movies featuring the green human-like character.
Gumby made his television debut on the Howdy Doody Show, in August of 1956. The episode was spoofed by Eddie Murphy on Saturday Night Live, in 1982. According to wikipedia, Gumby was awarded the title of best cartoon series of the 1950s, by the TV Guide, in 1993.
