Music games are veritable never-ending sources of profit, as people will flock to buy both the retail titles and the plastic instruments needed in order to play them, along with more tracks for the games via Downloadable Content.

That's why the two biggest companies involved in this genre, Activision and Harmonix, want to dominate each other and spoil each other's announcements or releases. After seeing the two franchises, Guitar Hero and Rock Band, duke it out on a variety of subjects, the month of September will be host to a very interesting duel.

As you all know, on September 9 Harmonix's The Beatles: Rock Band will appear, promising to take players on a fun-filled trip through the legendary band's history. Now, Activision saw fit to announce that the upcoming Guitar Hero 5 would appear on September 1, just a few days before the game released by the Harmonix team will drop.

Whether or not this move will turn out to be a profitable one is still everybody's guess – while the Guitar Hero franchise is more popular than Rock Band, let's not forget that The Beatles are the most popular band in the world, with a big number of fans ready to buy anything related to it.

Also, Activision has unveiled a list of bands and artists that will appear on this game, bringing more insight into just what genre of music we will expect in this future title. Here they are:

The Rolling Stones The White Stripes Kings of Leon Tom Petty Bob Dylan Johnny Cash Santana Vampire Weekend Beastie Boys Coldplay Duran Duran Gorillaz Jimmy Eat World Muse The Raconteurs

Who do you think will win this showdown? Is it Guitar Hero 5 or The Beatles: Rock Band? Leave us a comment with your choice.
