It’s a match made in geek heaven: two of the industry’s heaviest names working together to bring to life a classic sci-fi horror tale as that of H.P. Lovecraft, “At the Mountain of Madness.” Guillermo del Toro has signed on to direct the film, while James Cameron has agreed to produce it, Deadline informs.

If this turns out to be accurate, it could prove one of the most daring and hyped projects of modern cinema, word on the blogosphere has it. With del Toro’s unique directing style and Cameron’s eye for special effects, the horror tale will take a life of its own in 3D. Production is believed to begin next summer, with a release date estimated for fall 2011 or perhaps early 2012. With a guy like Cameron handling the 3D special effects, the film will probably turn out to be a stepping-stone, just like “Avatar.” Hopefully, it won’t take that long to make it.

“The film will be a big ticket item, shot in 3D where Cameron’s expertise can really help. Cameron has said he won’t put his name on many future movies outside of the 3D reboot of Fantastic Voyage at Fox, but I’ve heard he’s making an exception for del Toro. I’m told the film will begin pre-production in the next few weeks, and shoot next summer. In the Lovecraft tale, a gruesome discovery made during a scientific expedition to the South Pole in the 1930s hints at the true origin of mankind having come from elder gods from another planet. Bad things happen when those life forms are awakened,” Deadline writes.

Apparently, this has been on del Toro’s to-do list for quite some time. “The project is years in the works for del Toro and producers Susan Montford and Don Murphy, and it is easily the most ambitious project contemplated by the Pan;s Labyrinth director. I just put the film high on the list of dream projects for the geek crowd, after it came up numerous times in discussion with geek-savvy film executives, writers and dealmakers,” the same movie-oriented publication further informs.

As of this moment, not many details are available – that don’t fall into the speculation category, that is. Judging by how fans have received this, if the del Toro – Cameron project does happen, it will write history in sales and at the box office.
