When inSane was announced by publisher THQ and developer Volition a lot of gamers were skeptical of the concept, saying that core horror concepts cannot be translated to the video game medium.

But, in an interview with Collider, Guillermo del Toro, who is best known as a movie director but is also involved in gaming culture and development, said, “We’re being really, really nasty in the game. We’re really trying a lot of stuff that I don’t think would even fly in the movies.”

He also addressed the specificity of video game creation, adding, “With a videogame, you don’t have to solve one screenplay, you have to solve 20 screenplays, because you are giving the player the illusion of free will. If the character kills another character or destroys a building, the game goes one way; if the character doesn’t, it goes another. It keeps you very nimble.”

At the moment Del Toro is working on a new movie project, called Pacific Rim, which means that he cannot be as involved in the development of inSane as he would like but still takes part in weekly conference calls with the team, talking about design and gameplay.

He says that many ideas about the game are being thrown around at the moment and that the project is still in its early stages.

Del Toro says that he is also very humble when it comes to how to interacts with his team because he knows that he does not have the skill set for game creation and understands that he needs to learn a new set of rules about how to create content.

THQ has said that inSane will be have a sandbox structure and will have Lovercraftian tones.

The game is set to be launched at some point during 2013 and will be the first one of the trilogy.
