Forum posters jump in to do their bit, following the iPhone Dev Team’s big announcement

Moments after the iPhone Dev Team announced the big news, iPhone-savvy users immediately came to help, posting guides on how to jailbreak and unlock an iPhone for OS 3.1.2. One such guide is available from the Modmyi forums, and contains instructions on how to use PwnageTool 3.1.4, as well as download the appropriate iPhone OS 3.1.2 update / restore files to do the magic.

Forum poster salmansale jumps right in starting with step one – “Download and Install iTunes 9 from Apple site.” The ten-step tutorial looks fairly easy and also offers downloads for PwnageTool 3.1.4 and the original iPhone OS 3.1.2 firmware, leaving iPod touch instructions and downloads to become someone else's guide. IPSW downloads (offered via altafsayani.com) include:

- For iPhone 2G: “iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Custom_Restore”; - For iPhone 3G: “iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Custom_Restore”; - For iPhone 3GS: “iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Custom_Restore”.

According to the iPhone Dev Team, the iPhone 3GS is now supported out of the box in PwnageTool 3.1.4 (or if one has upgraded to 3.1.x in iTunes), something that not many users were expecting. Second-gen iPod touches are still supported in PwnageTool 3.1.4, however, they must already be jailbroken in order to work with the latest version of PwnageTool. More details are available over at the iPhone Dev Team’s blog. As usual, third-gen iPod touch owners are left out in the cold – no support from PwnageTool 3.1.4.
