Back in January 2009, Microsoft made available for download the sixth product under the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack for Software Assurance customers, namely: Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization version 1. In order to help customers make the best of MED-V v1, the Redmond company is also offering guidance for download, resources designed to help customers resolve incompatibility issues affecting Windows applications. The Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization, focused on MED-V version 1.0 is up for grabs via the Microsoft Download Center, along with additional Infrastructure Planning and Design resources.

Infrastructure Planning and Design specifically helps you by: “enabling you to quickly select the end users, locations, and virtual machines (VMs) that will be included in the project scope; assisting you in determining how many MED-V server instances will be required in order to deliver managed virtual machines to end users; defining the technical decision flow through the planning process; listing the decisions to be made and the commonly available options and considerations; relating the decisions and options to the business in terms of cost, complexity, and other characteristics; [and] stepping you through MED-V infrastructure design in a logical, sequential order,” revealed Celine Allee, director, Windows Client.

Microsoft is applauding MED-V as an ideal solution to combine the latest releases of the Windows client with existing applications, despite incompatibility problems. Essentially delivering a managed environment, MED-V allows corporate customers to embrace operating systems such as Windows Vista or Windows 7, when it will be available, and make both platforms play nice with legacy applications that otherwise could not integrate with the Windows clients. Of course, virtualization technology is at the heart of the solution, especially since MED-V is the evolution of the products acquired together with desktop virtualization vendor Kidaro.
