We ask our readers to pitch in with their suggestions for the next Mac OS name

Apple is preparing a new major version of its desktop operating system for Mac users, and all eyes are on WWDC, the company’s annual developer conference where all the big software unveilings are made.

The company itself has confirmed in a press statement that both iOS and OS X will see an overhaul.

“We look forward to gathering at WWDC 2013 with the incredible community of iOS and OS X developers,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

“Our developers have had the most prolific and profitable year ever, and we’re excited to show them the latest advances in software technologies and developer tools to help them create innovative new apps,” added Schiller.

“We can’t wait to get new versions of iOS and OS X into their hands at WWDC,” the Apple executive confirmed on April 24.

OS X is named after cats. For example, version 10.4 (which shipped in 2005) was called Tiger. Two years later, Apple unveiled OS X 10.5 dubbed Leopard.

Then came Snow Leopard, Lion, and the current OS X version we’re using today (10.8), Mountain Lion.

Versions shipped before Tiger / 2005 were also named after felines, such as Puma, Panther, and Cheetah.

So there’s little doubt that Apple will stamp yet another cat name on the next major version of its desktop operating system – at least until it proceeds to launch OS XI.

There have been countless discussions about the potential dubbing of OS X 10.9, some more hilarious than others. Suggestions range from “Domestic Cat” and “OS X Kitten” to “Nyan Cat” and “Lynx.”

Taking a stab in the dark, we’d say White Tiger sounds pretty awesome for a last major OS X revision before Apple moves to the next big stage.

Now it’s your turn to name Apple’s OS X 10.9. What do you think it’ll be called? The comments section awaits (no subscription required).
