Growl, the global notification system for Mac OS X, has been updated to version 1.2 (Final) after a few beta releases supporting both OS X Tiger and Leopard. However, the final release of Growl 1.2 only supports Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and later (Snow Leopard), and adds a slew of enhancements, tweaks and fixes. Some of the key changes with Growl 1.2 are listed below.

· Requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later; · Much behind-the-scenes modernization, especially in our Xcode projects; · Installer packages are now Leopard-only flat packages; · Updated copyright years; · Now 64-bit clean, so you no longer need to relaunch System Preferences into 32-bit mode; · Now warns when you try to install a plug-in that won't work under the current architecture, such as a 32-bit-only plug-in on a 64-bit Mac running Snow Leopard; · GrowlMail – Compatible with Snow Leopard (through 10.6.1); · GrowlSafari – Completely rewritten; it's an application now, using mach_inject (64-bit clean); · Growl.framework – 64-bit clean; · GrowlTunes – runs in 64-bit when possible and no longer re-notifies every few seconds when you're listening to a Live365 stream; · HardwareGrowler – new icon; · Uninstaller – Now a Universal Binary, so it works even if you don't have Rosetta installed.

Best known for its ability to display notifications (although it can also be used in other ways), Growl provides a way for your applications to talk to you, without having to actually navigate to those apps’ windows. Apps that are constantly updated, such as IM and Twitter clients, are best friends with Growl. They use it to let you know new messages / tweets are in. The Mac OS X Mail.app also makes good use of Growl, displaying a notification (wherever you decide it should appear) as soon as an incoming email has been placed in your Inbox.

Growl 1.2 Final requires Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Growl 1.2 Beta 4 is the latest Tiger-supported version available. However, the latest stable version for Tiger users is 1.1.6., while the latest Growl for OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) is version 0.7.6. Both can be downloaded from the official Growl website, here.
