Ancient Wars is a classic, real-time strategy map that was constructed using the Lordaeron Summer tile set. It's inspired from the game Age of Empires, so you will have to hunt for food, gather wood and try to advance your civilization as fast as possible.

The first thing you need to find is food. Try looking around and, if you don't find anything, then use the bate item near your base. That item draws animals to it, and, then, all you need to do is remember the direction that one animal came from in order to find the rest of the herd. Then, you should worry about lumber. Find a forest and then build a ramshackle shelter that serves as a lumber drop-off point. Shelters can also create new units.

After you've acquired both food and lumber, you need to decide how you want to play the game: you can either try to out-tech your opponents, which could leave you vulnerable, or you can buy quick upgrades and then rush your opponents. But remember that, if the attack fails, you will fall behind in the tech race.

Your hero is not actually a real hero, but he will have some use in the game. For nomads, he designates where the offspring of domesticated animals will appear. If you don't choose this type of unit, then don't even bother building a hero.

There are two races that you can go for: nomad or civilization. Both have their own strengths. The civilization path is more defensive, but is very stable and dependable. It has units that are good in number, but somewhat slow when compared with nomadic units. The nomad path requires more skill to play, as it's very unstable in requiring food and lumber. Nomads have some very fast units, but, if you line them up against civilization units, they will lose. You have to make use of the nomads’ speed to win the game.
