It took Alfonso Cuaron many years to finally be able to see his passion project “Gravity” on the big screen, but the long wait and all the hard work are finally paying off: the film has had a record-breaking first weekend at the North American box office.

Entertainment Tonight reports that the film, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as two astronauts stranded in space after a mission goes terribly wrong, opened to $55.6 million (€40.9 million) in the US, pushing last week’s number one to second position.

That would be “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.” Third spot went to another newcomer, “Runner Runner,” starring Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck, which made only $7.9 million (€5.82 million) in its first weekend.

ET notes that “Gravity” “[recorded] the largest October opening in box-office history. The previous record holder was Paranormal Activity 3, which conjured $52.6 million [€38.7 million] in 2011.”
