14 DAY TRIAL // Gratuitous Space Battles 2, the indie space strategy game from Positech Games, has just entered open beta and has gotten a neat trailer showing off its features.
The game deals mainly with massive-scale space battles, where players can take control of their very own armada and wreak havoc upon the enemy.
Gratuitous Space Battles does away with base building and throws you right into the fray, giving you what every science fiction fan always wanted: epic space battles fought by huge spaceships, with a ton of lasers and missiles flying around.
You can select the loadout of your ships, put vessels together from modular components, arrange them into fleets, deploy them with various orders of engagement, and then sit back and enjoy all the crazy action.
It's a "hands-off" space battle sim, where instead of trying to hit targets on your screen, you zoom out and watch the entire fireworks show, featuring a crazy amount of lasers and more explosions than a Michael Bay movie does.
Much more exciting than actual space battles
If you ever watched a space armada scene in a movie or TV series and wanted to take part in something similar, this is pretty much your best bet. Sure, EVE Online has massive space battles too, but you have to give an arm and a leg (not to mention countless hours of your time) before seeing one, as opposed to the instant action here.
Furthermore, since the actual science of space battles might turn out to translate into encounters that are significantly less spectacular than fantasy warfare, Gratuitous Space Battles 2 is decidedly the winner in style points.
The game has just entered open beta, which means that everyone who pre-purchases it can join the action and test the game. For the time being, the open beta is only available on PC, and you get the space battle sim from the Gratuitous Space Battles 2 website.
