Sony Computer Entertainment has sent word that overall sales of its flagship racing franchise Gran Turismo has gone over the 60 million units sold barrier, 12 years and 11 months after the first title in the series was released, in 1997, on the Japanese market.

Sony has made Gran Turismo one of the games used to highlight the power of its new consoles, managing to move more than 10 million units overall for all the main releases in the series.

Gran Turismo 2 managed to move 10.81 million units, Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec is the front runner of the series with 14.80 million copies moved worldwide while GT4 has gone up to 10.86 million.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue also managed to sell very well, despite being somewhat of a glorified demonstration of what the developers at Polyphony Digital were capable of when using the PlayStation 3 platform, managing to move close to 5 million units to interested fans.

The latest title in the Gran Turismo series has launched on November 24, after a series of delays, and has managed, in the period between release and December 6, when Sony gathered its latest data, to sell 5.52 million units all over the world, performing best in Europe, where more than 3 million copies have been snapped up by gamers.

For the last few installments, Europe seems to be the more fertile ground for the Gran Turismo series, with North America appreciably less interested than before in racing simulations of more interested in more arcade offerings like Need for Speed or Forza Motorsport.

Gran Turismo 5 has 200 Premium cars, fully simulated and with complete damage included, and also allows the player to enjoy more than 800 other cars from previous editions of the game on more than 70 variations of the included tracks.
