Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has confirmed a release date for its upcoming Gotham City Impostors, the online first person shooter where players can disguise themselves either as Batman or The Joker and engage in different sorts of matches.

Warner Bros. wants to take its Batman license in new directions, not just with the help of Rocksteady Studios' brilliant Batman Arkham franchise, which saw the release of Batman: Arkham City title last month, but also through other projects.

Among them we have Gotham City Impostors, an online shooter where teams of Batmans and Jokers fight it out for supremacy in all sorts of matches that have a distinct tongue-in-cheek feel.

After hearing and seeing quite a few glimpses at the game in recent months, Warner Bros. has finally pinned a release date onto Gotham City Impostors, which will appear for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, via their respective online digital distribution services, like Steam, the PlayStation Store or the Xbox Live Arcade, on January 10, 2012.

In case you're not familiar with the game up until now, you can check out the official description from Warner Bros. below.

"Gotham City Impostors is an original download-only first-person shooter where up to 12 players battle for control of an unhinged Gotham City overrun by Impostors inspired by the DC Comics characters Batman and The Joker."

"Gotham City Impostors is an online multiplayer game unlike any other, giving players the opportunity to engage in unconventional urbane warfare as they personalize their own Impostors. Gamers will create their very own version of the Bats or the Jokerz characters using unprecedented customization options including insane costumes, homemade gadgets and a wide range of traditional and inventive weapons. The game will feature maps and modes inspired by DC Comics’ Batman license."

Until its release at the beginning of 2012, you can enjoy a top notch Batman-themed experience through the very impressive Batman: Arkham City.
