Nielsen//NetRatings has released an audience study for May 2006 analyzing the Internet search market. Google still reigns supreme in the top 10 Web search services providers, outranking its competitors with no less than 2.78 billion searches. The Mountain View giant is still the dominant player on the market with 49.1% of all searches.

Yahoo and MSN come in second and third but also gain important ground in respect to Google with growths of 34% and 42%, Yahoo counting up to 1.29 billion which is equivalent to 22.9% of the market and MSN up to 600 million searches and 10.6%. AOL is forth with 360 million searches and a total of 6.4% out of all the many searches.

"We're three steps into a marathon," said Bradley Horowitz, Yahoo's vice president of product strategy. "We'll never know enough about the page looking at it in isolation to do relevance and ranking. You've got to step back and look at the link structure, who's linking to who. Anything that requires human expertise, where you would value the opinion of your neighbor, your friend, your mentor, people you trust in different contexts-that's the real opportunity".
