YouTube and the search engine among the winners

The recently-released Google Universal Search is more than a simple technology as it manages to drive traffic to other Google products such as Maps and YouTube. According to a recent study conducted by Hitwise Google, the search engine that attracted 64.8% of all U.S. Internet searches is benefiting from the Universal Search technology because most of its products recorded boosts of traffic. For example, YouTube increased its traffic from a 10.65 percentage recorded on May 12, 2007 to 11.53 percent in June 2, 2007. Google Book Search was placed among the last ones because its traffic was decreased from 0.36 percent to 0.29. As a quick note, this chart refers to the US visits to custom category of top Google properties.

"Our column in TIME this week is about Google's dominance of the search market which, as of this week, measures at 64.8% of all U.S. Internet searches, more than double the nearest competitor Yahoo! Search. It appears from this early analysis that the big winners for this new format are YouTube and Maps, while Image Search and News (which under the older format were occasionally featured top of page) are on the losing end," Bill Tancer from Hitwise said.

Google's Universal Search was regarded as the most innovative search technology on the internet because it is able to provide all types of results in a single interface. Basically, you enter just a single keyword and you'll get results including websites, images, books, videos and other formats supported by Google.

Now, the big winner of this chart seems to be YouTube as it managed to attract even more traffic to the official page. Still, the parent company Google wants even more and announced its plans to insert pre-clip adverts, in a move meant to allow uploaders to earn money. This can be done with ease because Google wants to roll out a revenue sharing campaign to share the earnings for a certain clip with the users who uploaded a video.
