The Google-acquired Photovine has been updated for iPhone and iPad with a few enhancements, such as a new open signup system, ties to Facebook and Twitter, SMS email invites, and more.

“Photovine is a fun way to learn more about your friends, meet new people, and share your world like never before,” according to the developers.

A native application for iPhone and iPod touch devices, Photovine lets you post a picture with a theme and let others contribute with similar stuff in that ‘vine’.

“It all starts with what we call a photovine: a group of photos around a single, shared caption. Start a new vine with a photo and caption of your own or add your photo/take on someone else's vine,” says Photovine.

The release notes for Photovine version 1.3 can be found below:

What's New in Version 1.3

- Invite system replaced with open signup - everyone can join Photovine now! - Crash fix for posting a photo when the feed has a timeline break - If user adds a note to a post, include that note as the first comment - Ability to post photos to Facebook and Twitter - Find friends from Facebook and Twitter - SMS and email invites

Reminiscent of Piictu to the point that one would believe the two services are one and the same, Photovine is a community that's all about creating fun and unique collections of photos called Vines.

According to the makers of the app, “A vine is like a constantly growing family of photos connected through a common caption created by you, your friends, and people all over the world.”

The purpose is to have  people add photos to vines, and tell their own stories about the moments that define their lives in a way that's social, creative, and fun.

Photovine is free for all iDevice owners and requires iOS 4.2 or later.
