Google has started to test, without too much publicity, an expansion of the AdSense program designed to display on sites text or image ads, which are paid per click. Google is testing the introduction of this program into RSSs, so they will be able to display contextual ads.

Although RSSs are the most popular form of content and news distribution, they don't generate any income to advertisers. Adding AdSense to these feeds could transform them in a profitable business.

One of the first sites to introduce this from of ads is Longhornblogs.com, maintained by RobertMcLaws, who said that already ad images are inserted into 61 of the feeds from its blog.

McLaws didn't offer any details about this technology, and only said that is being tested; Barry Schnitt, Google's spokesman confirmed the test but didn't offer any other details.

Such an implementation could allow ad clients a better targeting, in this moment, being hard to choose what sites display a certain ad.

According to an article from eWeek it looks like Google is planning to get involved in CPM ads (cost per 1000). Introducing contextual ads in RSS feeds is a technology also tested by other companies: Kanoodle, Moreover Technologies and Yahoo.
